One of the key factors in finding your Lightform shade is to understand which shade family you fall into. Within the 26 shades Lightform offers, they span from Light to Deep. Once you have discovered which shade family you fall into, then it’s time to find your undertone. There are three main undertones – warm, cool, and neutral. Warm undertones have hints of yellow or peach, cool undertones lean towards pink or blue, and neutral undertones strike a balance between warm and cool. We love doing the vein test – if the veins on your wrist are more green, you have warm undertones. Blue veins mean cool undertones. Neutral undertones are a mix of both blue and green veins.

What is the Monk Skin Tone Scale? 

The Monk Skin Tone Scale is a 10-shade scale system designed to better represent the diversity of human skin tones, especially for people with darker skin, compared to older scales used in tech.  

Developed by Ellis Monk and partnered with Google, it aims to be more inclusive for computer vision research and applications by capturing a wider range of colors and addressing biases in earlier methods. The goal is to combat color bias and race bias for a clearer picture of skin tones. Ellis Monk wanted everyone to feel represented in their appearance and existence.  

“In the past with shade finder quizzes in the beauty industry, it relied on us to choose who we look like – usually images of models to determine our shade family and undertones. But we have an unconscious bias, and often choose who we think we look like and that’s not always explicitly skin tone,” Estela says. “Using the Monk Skin Tone Scale scans your face and puts you within the spectrum of shades. But within each shade, there is infinite granularity. It removes biases from the equation to give a clearer recommendation.” 

How was shade classified before the Monk Skin Tone Scale? 

In 1975, a dermatologist named Thomas B. Fitzpatrick developed The Fitzpatrick Scale – essentially a six–tone system based on skin pigmentation and response to sun exposure. It wasn’t developed with diversity in mind, and so when it came to beauty brands using it for complexion products, it was flawed. The skin tone detection often gave less than ideal results, so people received shades that were not what they had in mind. 

“People often feel like they’re lumped into categories – and in today’s world where diversity is so important, it’s important to tech artificial intelligence about these biases and not repeat problems we had in the past,” Estela says. “The goal is to move forward and solve the problems consumers have had in the past with finding their perfect foundation match.”

The Lip Liner Trick: The X

This tip comes straight from Ryane’s Mom and is one of the first beauty hacks she noticed when she was a kid. Once you’ve prepped your lips and are ready to begin your look (this should involve a light exfoliation plus a lip balm), take your chosen lip liner and make sure the tip is sharpened to a comfortable point.

Then from your Cupid’s bow, make an ‘X’ shape from the tips of your top lip downward. Then continue to line the rest of your top lip. This creates dimension and helps with a symmetrical Cupid’s bow. You can also fake dimension by drawing a straight line right down the center of your bottom lip, smudging it a little before applying the rest of your lip products like lipstick or lip gloss.

The Lip Liner Trick: Magnify It

Often times when we are applying our lip looks, we think we know where the border of our lip starts and ends, but we don’t actually. This can result in uneven lip looks or even bleeding products over the course of the day.

Ryane suggests using a magnifying mirror to find your vermillion border (that’s where your lip meets your skin). That way you can decide if you want to line perfectly on your border – or if you want to try and overline your lips, this is a smart way to start slow. Sketch your line lightly over the border as you look into the mirror and build up from there.

The Lip Liner Trick: Fill It In

This tip not only helps create dimension on your lip looks, but it also aids in your lip shades lasting longer throughout the day. Start lining both lips from the outside of your lips in, lightly overlining the bottom of your bottom lip. Then, as if creating an ombre lip liner effect, shade in the outer corners of both upper and lower lip – blending lightly with your finger. Top it with a translucent Dripglass Glazed High Shine Lip Gloss or lip balm.
