Should I Apply Setting Spray Before Or After Setting Powder?

Should I Apply Setting Spray Before Or After Setting Powder?

Should I Apply Setting Spray Before Or After Setting Powder?

  • Behind the Beauty
3 min

Every beauty baddie knows the importance of a flawless, long-lasting look. But when it comes to setting that look, the question of setting spray vs. setting powder often pops up, especially regarding the order of application.

Should you spray first or powder first? The answer, like many things in beauty, isn’t as simple as choosing a lip gloss shade. Never mind…that’s hard too. Regardless, we’ve got you.

Let’s start by learning more about each of these makeup setting essentials, then dive into the ultimate, provocative beauty debate – do you apply setting spray before or after setting powder?

Understanding the Best Sets

What’s a setting spray? What’s a setting powder? Read on, bestie.

Setting Spray: A lightweight mist applied after makeup application to lock everything in place and prevent smudging, fading, or meltdowns. We at Morphe are known for our setting sprays, thanks to the Continuous Setting Mist.

Setting Powder: A finely milled powder used to mattify the skin, absorb excess oil, and prevent foundation from creasing. The Morphe Bake & Set Soft Focus Setting Powder is basically 24 hours of shine-free setting perfection to ensure your look stays locked.

The Traditional Set: Powder First

Most often you might see makeup artists recommending applying setting spray after setting powder for the below reasons.

Drying Time: Setting powder needs time to set and absorb oil before a setting spray is applied. Applying spray too soon can activate the powder, making it look cakey or patchy.

Layering: Think of creating the perfection complexion like building a house. Your foundation is the foundation, setting powder creates a smoother surface, and setting spray acts like the sealant, locking everything in.

Control: Applying setting powder first allows for targeted application, focusing only on areas that need oil control. Setting spray then provides a more even, all-over finish.

…dive into the ultimate, provocative beauty debate – do you apply setting spray before or after setting powder?

The Ultimate Answer: Setting Spray or Setting Powder?

As you can see, there are just no rules when it comes to beauty. It’s up to you. Here are some tips to finding your fave way.

Test on your hand or arm first to see how the products interact.

Apply each product in different orders and observe the results.

Consider your skin type and desired finish. Oily skin might benefit from powder first, while dry skin might prefer spray first.

So-Flattering Eyeshadow Shades for Your Eye Color

So-Flattering Eyeshadow Shades for Your Eye Color

So-Flattering Eyeshadow Shades for Your Eye Color

5 min.

Playing around with color theory in makeup can be beyond fun – especially when it comes to eyeshadow shades. With seemingly endless options, you actually have so much power to wield with pigments, finishes, textures, and more. But with a little knowledge about color theory, there are subtle ways to choose your shades so your eye color really pops.

We chatted with Morphe’s Education Specialist, Camila Manchester, on how color theory can amp up your eyeshadow game – and some shades and palettes that can inspire your next look.

Why You Might Want To Choose a Flattering Eyeshadow for Your Eye Color

As you’re swatching eyeshadow shades in-store or loading up your cart online, you can use color theory to help you self-edit your shopping haul. Certain shades can enhance and bring out the subtle tones in your eyes, while others could wash you out a bit. We believe in trying out everything to see what you like (sometimes you want a monochromatic or goth girl vibe), but keeping these tips in mind can give you tips on creating looks that captivate anyone who stares *deep* into your eyes.

Choosing Complementary Eyeshadow Shades Based on Color Theory

It’s time to delve into color theory to further refine your eyeshadow choices. Flattering colors can create a striking contrast to really make your natural eye color pop. Experiment with different shades within the color wheel to find the perfect combination that best accentuates your unique eye color and personal style. By understanding color theory and your eye color, you can achieve a variety of makeup looks.

The Best Eyeshadow Colors for Blue Eyes

To play up blue eyes, you can opt for shades that complement and contrast with your eye color: soft, neutral tones like champagne, taupe, and silver can emphasize the blue hue of your eye, while deeper shades such as copper, bronze, and brown can create a striking contrast, intensifying the color.

Start by pressing the shade Gems With Benefits onto the lid with a small detail eye brush. Then move softly through the crease with shade Tauperazzi and buff it in under the bottom lash line. Enhance the upper lash line with shade Jet Worth and blend out the outer corners of the lid, keeping it right to the lid and barely reaching the crease. Gently stamp it on the outer lash line.

To highlight the signature Molten Metal shade called Going Platinum that is in the center of the palette, spritz a small detailed eye brush with our Continuous Setting Mist. Then apply gently to the inner corner of each eye, and line the upper and lower lash line. Your blue eyes will pop against this cool-toned, silvery eye look.

The Best Eyeshadow Colors for Green or Hazel Eyes

To enhance your green eyes, amplify their natural allure with complementary shades.

Earthy tones like warm golds, deep oranges, and olive green can enhance the green in your eyes and bring warmth to your eyeshadow look. For a pop of contrast, consider using purples and plums to make your eyes stand out. To create a mesmerizing effect, experiment with metallics such as gold and bronze eyeshadows to add depth and radiance to your eyes. To really enhance your green eyes, try the Morphe Rich & Foiled Artistry Palette - Rose To Fame.

Use an eye blending brush to apply shade Aristocratic Aura all over the lid, crease, and lower lash line. Take shade Spoiler Alert with a large eye blending brush and soften the edges, pulling the shadow towards the end of the brow.

Make the most of the Molten Metal shade called Rose to Fame by spritzing an angled eye brush with our Continuous Setting Mist and lining your upper lash line. Finish by pressing shade Nepo Beige-y to the inner corners of the eye and just below the brow. Green eyes, snatched.

The Best Eyeshadow Colors for Brown Eyes

To enhance the richness of brown eyes, opt for earthy tones like warm caramels, deep greens, and golden hues. These shades can bring out the warmth and depth of brown eyes, creating a nice and natural look. For a bolder statement, try a smokey look in deep shades reminiscent of fall to make your eyes pop. Shimmering golds and bronzes can add radiance to your brown eyes. Morphe’s Rich & Foiled Artistry Palette - Gold Seeker offers a beautiful selection of these shades, perfect for creating metallic eye looks for brown eyes.

Start by defining your crease with shade Fancy That, blending the shadow to the deepest part of your crease. Next with a shadow definer brush, pat Pretty Penny onto the entire lid. Then using an angled brush, apply a small amount of Dark Money to your natural crease line, creating a subtle cut crease. Apply the same shade to the lower lash line, extending it just past the end of your eye.

Apply the Molten Metal shade Gold Seeker dry – to the inside corners of your eyes. Then spritz the brush with the Continuous Setting Mist and press that same shade to the center of each lid. Stunning brown eyes.

Tips for Leveling Up Your Eyeshadow Looks

After choosing your eyeshadows based on your eye color, now let’s have some fun. First, prep the lid with Morphe’s Translucent Eyelid Primer to ensure that your eyeshadow look stays put all day. Once your eyelid is prepped, use your favorite Morphe eyeshadow brush to seamlessly blend, and use lighter eyeshadow shades on the inner corners and darker shades on the outer corners for a mesmerizing effect. If you want to finish off your makeup look with eyeliner, check out Morphe’s Make it Big Brush - Tip Liquid Liner to make your eyes pop.

Hydration vs. Soft Focus: Lightform and Filter Effect Foundation

Let’s talk foundation — one of our favorite topics. Beauty newbie or not, foundation is one of those products most of us have in stock and some opinion on. There are so many options out there, from different finishes, coverages, and formulas. It can be easy to keep buying new ones that never get used.

If you’re looking to minimize your foundation collection, these two cover all you need – a hydrating foundation for glowy, no-makeup-makeup days and a medium coverage foundation for when you’re into more of a look.

This is why we launched the Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation as the glowy-skin sister to our best-selling Filter Effect Soft Focus Foundation. And like sisters, they’re happiest when they get equal attention. So while these two must-haves are going to be your holy grail foundations, let’s take a deep dive into the differences between the two.

Morphe’s Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation Makeup

We call the look real skin, perfected. Think about your best skin day, then take it a step further – that’s Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation. Not only is it weightless with
a buildable medium coverage, but it melts into the skin to diffuse imperfections instantly for that second-skin look.

The result is your skin, switched on—with a healthy-looking, hydrated, cared-for radiance that glows from within. Find your shade by taking our Shade Finder Quiz.

Coverage and Finish

Some glowy, radiant foundations add radiance on top of the skin, but Lightform is skincare-infused so it works hard to actively improve your skin and reveal the natural radiance that was there all along. Morphe's Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation Makeup is specially formulated to provide long-lasting skin hydration and a dewy finish. Enriched with skin-loving ingredients, this foundation offers buildable medium coverage that leaves your skin looking fresh and radiant.

Longevity and Wearability

Lightform contains SPF 20 to help protect your skin from harmful UV rays, making it a great choice for everyday wear. If you prefer a natural, hydrated look with a hint of luminosity, this foundation is the ideal choice for you. Lightform also has an innovative biomimetic HydroRelief Complex that hydrates skin for up to sixteen hours. It’s long-wearing, sweat-proof, and water-proof – the perfect foundation option if you’re having a casual day running errands, into a more subtle makeup look, or just want to improve your skin while basically doing nothing.

Skin Type Suitability

The lightweight formula of this product is designed to provide comfortable wear from morning to night, making it ideal for those with dry or normal skin types. Its silky texture goes on smoothly and blends seamlessly, giving a natural-looking finish that lasts for hours without feeling heavy or caked-on. This product is great for everyday use, whether you're heading to work or meeting up with friends. The moisturizing properties in the formula help to keep your skin hydrated and looking radiant, while also providing a barrier against environmental stressors. Say goodbye to dry, flaky skin and hello to a flawless complexion with this long-lasting, comfortable foundation.

The Morphe Advanced Makeup Brush Guide

The Morphe Advanced Makeup Brush Guide

The Morphe Advanced Makeup Brush Guide

  • Artistry 101
5 min.

Are you totally beauty-obsessed? Do you own more eyeshadow palettes than pots and pans? Can you list every Morphe lip liner shade with your eyes closed? If this is you, we created this advanced makeup brush guide for you.

Whether you’re an actual full-on makeup artist or just someone who can’t get enough of all things beauty, you’re gonna wanna bookmark this page. Here is every makeup brush you’ll need to slay every day the Morphe way.

Domed Foundation Brush

A domed foundation brush is a great tool for achieving a smooth, airbrushed finish to your complexion. The domed shape allows for easy maneuvering around your nose and cheeks, no matter what kind of foundation or tinted product you use.

Use short strokes for more coverage, or lighter, sweeping motions for a sheerer look.

Paddle Foundation Brush

The paddle brush is a classic for its precision laydown. When you are using it for foundation or concealer, you are painting on a product. This gives you control to build only where desired. For a seamless finish, follow application with a blending sponge or domed brush.

Domed Concealer Brush

The dome shape of this concealer brush lets you target areas without disturbing the makeup you’ve already applied, like foundation. Buff the concealer with the brush's sides in small, circular motions to seamlessly blend it for a natural, flawless finish.

Slanted Concealer Brush

This brush’s precise, slanted head nestles into the undereyes, making it your go-to for brightening. Pat on concealer to concentrate laydown, then gently blend it out. Also a great option for layering, you can apply concealer over a color corrector without disturbing the formula underneath.

Tapered Powder Blush Brush

A tapered powder blush brush is great for versatility when it comes to blush looks for beginners. Use the tapered tip to apply color directly to the apples of your cheeks. Then, with light, sweeping motions, blend the blush upwards and outwards towards your temples.

This technique deposits color where you want it and buffs it seamlessly for that coveted glow.

Liquid Blush Brush

This brush’s larger, flexible tip enhances product payoff. Use it at an angle to press on and build color as desired. Then blend out the application with the tapered tip, which adapts to your cheek’s curves to effortless diffuse application.

Angled Powder Bronzer Brush

Looking for a big bronze effect? This brush delivers. Use a full-bodied, fluffy, angled tip to hit the tops of your cheekbones and bridge of your nose. You can also sweep it over the perimeter of your face to set cream and liquid bronzer.

Here is every makeup brush you’ll need to slay every day the Morphe way.

Contour Blender Brush

A contour blender brush is your sculpting bestie. Lightly tap the edge of the brush into your bronzer, tapping off any excess. Use the side to follow the natural hollow beneath your cheekbone, starting near your ear and sweeping inwards towards your temple.

This defines your cheekbones and adds warmth. Blend everything out.

Full-Bodied Highlighter Brush

Dip the pointed tip into your highlighter, tap off excess. Use the tip for precise application on areas like cheekbones, nose bridge, and Cupid's bow. For broader highlighting, sweep the sides of the brush across cheekbones and brow bones.

This brush offers control and effortless blending for all the shine.

Tapered Highlighter Brush

Consider this your glow-getter. This precision tapered brush is crafted to put your brow bones, bridge of your nose, tops of your cheeks, and Cupid’s bow in their best light. Grip the handle at the end for creating soft radiance and near the ferrule for achieving ultra-radiance.

All-Over Fluffy Brush

An all-over fluffy brush is perfect for effortless application and diffused finish. Start by swirling the brush in your powder product (blush, bronzer, setting powder) and tapping off any excess. Hold the brush loosely and use circular motions to buff the product onto your face. Focus on larger areas like your cheeks, forehead, and jawline.

For bronzer, follow the natural contours of your face for a subtle sculpting effect. This brush is all about building product gradually – for a more intense look, simply repeat the swirling and buffing motions.

Large Rounded Blender Eyeshadow Brush

The blender eyeshadow brush delivers so many great eye looks. Dip the fluffy bristles lightly into your chosen eyeshadow shade, tapping off any excess. Use windshield wiper motions (back and forth) to buff out harsh lines and blend colors together on your eyelid.

For extra diffused blending, hold the brush loosely and move it in circular motions. To intensify color in the crease, use the brush sideways and gently press the product onto your eyelid.

Flat Packer Brush

A flat packer brush packs on color with high impact. Unlike fluffy blending brushes, it deposits color directly. Lightly tap the flat surface of the brush into your eyeshadow. For maximum color payoff, pat the product onto your eyelid with a pressing motion. This technique ensures even application and intense color.

You can also use the flat edge to apply a base shadow all over your lid for better blending of other shades.

Smudger Brush

A smudger brush transforms your eye look by softening lines and creating a smoky effect. Start by picking up a small amount of eyeshadow or eyeliner with the tip of the brush. For eyeshadow, gently wiggle the brush in the product to pick up color without packing it on. Then, use a pressing motion to smudge the product along your lash line, upper or lower, depending on your desired effect.

You can also use short, back-and-forth strokes to gently diffuse harsh lines. For a softer effect, buff out the product with the sides of the brush.

Pointed Puff

This makeup tool goes beyond just a fluffy application of setting powder. The pointed tip is its secret weapon. It allows you to get into those hard-to-reach areas, like the undereye and around the nose, for flawless makeup application. This is especially helpful for setting concealer under the eyes.

Plus, the pointed tip is great for targeted baking, which can help lock in your concealer and foundation for a long-lasting, airbrushed finish.

Brow Brush with Spoolie

The angled brush side lets you apply brow powder or gel with precision, mimicking natural hair strokes for a perfectly defined look. Then, flip the brush over and use the spoolie to blend out the color for a soft, natural finish. No harsh lines, just perfectly sculpted brows that frame your face.

Who cares about your typical boring New Year’s resolutions? You could work out more, eat more celery or something, but where’s the fun in that? This year, commit to elevating your artistry game. Have you always wondered how some girls just seem to get it when it comes to lip liner? Pass someone on the street who clearly had fun getting ready that morning? Personally, I’ve been seriously eyeing the puppy eyeliner trend for months. There is literally no reason why that can’t be you. New Year’s resolutions don’t have to make you feel bad or set you up for failure. They can be fun AF and you can succeed at each and every one of them. Especially with our help.

So here they are – four attainable and stunning resolutions for New Year’s 2024. And when all the compliments start rolling in? Tell them Morphe got you there.

THE SUBTLE & POUTY LIP LINER HACK

The perfect lined lip starts with the right lip liner. You want a liner that doesn’t snag, pull, or leave a chalky finish. The Morphe Soulmatte Filling Gel Lip Liner is ideal for someone just starting out in the lip liner cult or if you just don’t have time for a whole thing. Choose a shade that matches your natural lip color or something that would
flatter your favorite lipstick or gloss shade. Start by drawing an “X” across the top of your lip beneath the Cupid’s bow. Then slightly overly the bow, trailing off near the edges of the top lip. Next, line the very middle of your bottom lip, trailing off before your lip ends. For added dimension and plumpness, then draw a line down the center of your bottom lip. Gently blend and blur before adding your lip balm, gloss, or lip product. Juicy!

HOW TO DO PUPPY EYELINER

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been doing the same cat eye with a liquid eyeliner for a decade plus. It always looks bomb, but maybe you wanna switch it up for 2024? The puppy eyeliner trend is subtle, flattering, and cute as hell. Just grab your trusty Felt-TipLiquid Liner (you could also use an eyeliner pencil) and start by lining the upper lash line from the center to the corner and bringing the line down at the corner. Follow the line down to a sharp point. Then use an eyeliner pencil to line your waterline or lower lash line, keeping the inner half of the lower lash line bare. That wasn’t so ruff, was it?

You could work out more, eat more celery or something, but where’s the fun in that? This year, commit to elevating your artistry game.

CREATIVITY STARTS WITH CONFIDENCE

We’ve always said that there are no rules when it comes to beauty (I mean, there are…but you can also totally ignore them). Challenge yourself to truly having fun with your makeup one day a week. Is that smearing on a shimmer eyeshadow shade, not caring if it smudges? Wearing a neon shade from an unused palette as a blush? Dare we say, highlighter on your lips? Go all out – beauty is about being unapologetically you, and don’t you forget it.

The Ultimate Guide To Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

The Ultimate Guide To Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

The Ultimate Guide To Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

3 min

The real makeup girlies know – cleaning your makeup brushes is a self-care step we all need. Not only can dirty brushes grow bacteria, oil, and makeup residue which can lead to breakouts (ew), but not cleaning your makeup brushes also an affect the way your foundation and complexion products look on your skin. You also know there’s nothing more luxe than a fluffy clean brush on your skin. From our new Lightform Extended Hydration Foundation to our best-selling Filter Effect Soft Radiance Foundation, we know out stuff when it comes to a flawless complexion to brush on your artistry. This is your guide to all things brush hygiene.

Staying in on a Friday night to wash your makeup brushes? Total boss move.

How often should I clean my makeup brushes?

Think about it – you do laundry weekly, wash your bedding bi-weekly, and the dishwasher is always full. Why shouldn’t your makeup brushes get the same love all your other lifestyle staples get? Whether you are working with a full makeup brush set
or just a well-used beauty sponge, we recommend that you are cleaning your makeup brushes and tools weekly to maintain the integrity of the brushes and those gorgeous looks you’ve been creating lately.

Make it a fun night – throw on some music, a face mask, and pour a fun little drink (seltzer, champagne, whatever your vibe) to wash your makeup brushes. Make it a part of your weekly self-care regimen and you’ll soon see what a huge difference washing your makeup brushes makes.

What should I use to clean my makeup brushes?

It’s time to gather up your makeup brush cleaning essentials – and make sure you are not using any harsh chemicals or soaps that could damage the bristles. These are your babies. Gather together a gentle brush cleanser, antibacterial soap, a bowl of lukewarm water, a clean towel, and you can even find a brush cleaning mat designed specifically to clean your makeup brushes.

Create a space and lay everything out, then gather together all the brushes and beauty sponges you would like to clean.

How do I store my makeup brushes?

Whatever you do, do not allow your makeup brushes to dry standing straight up – this can damage the handle and hardware of your brushes and loosen the bristles. Instead, let them air dry on a flat surface on top of the clean towel, with the bristles hanging slightly over the edge.

Once fully dry, you can get back to that artistry, with gorgeous, clean makeup brushes you deserve. Then keep them in a clean case or container.

The Ultimate Guide to Setting Spray

The Ultimate Guide to Setting Spray

The Ultimate Guide to Setting Spray

  • Behind the Beauty
4 min

How to ensure all your hard work lasts from wake-up to wind-down.

If you ask any beauty expert, Morphe knows to slay a setting spray. Our Continuous Setting Mist is a desert island product for MUAs, influencers, celebs, and anyone looking to stay looking snatched all damn day. Its continuous micro-fine mist is not only effective – it’s downright addictive. The formula is so loved that we’ve expanded the franchise to fit to all kinds of setting needs, from added glow to sun protection.

Choose Your Perfect Setting

Welcome to our ultimate guide to Morphe setting spray. We’ve also bugged some of our team for their pro tips on making the most of their mist.

CONTINUOUS SETTING MIST

The Morphe continuous setting spray was the blueprint for good reason. Say goodbye for good to melting, caking, and fading of your look. This continuous, air-powered setting spray delivers an even and controlled application with a micro-fine mist that sets liquid or powder makeup with a radiant finish.

“I love our OG Continuous Setting Spray the best. I have oily skin and it keeps my makeup on all day. I always start with my complexion first (foundation, concealer, blush, contour, and bake with our bake & set banana powder and puff, brush off the excessive after a few minutes). Once done, I set my entire face and dry it with a hand fan. After I move to my eyes, and if I am using shimmery shadows, I use a little setting spray directly onto the eyeshadow on my brush to intensify the color and shimmer.”

CONTINUOUS PREP & SET MIST+

A Morphe continuous setting spray plus skincare? Sign us all the way up. This supercharged setting spray is packed with good-for-skin ingredients to nourish, help with skin hydration by protecting its moisture barrier, and to help boost skin elasticity. Your skin can treat itself to ceramides, electrolytes, and antioxidants, all while your makeup is locked in all day long.

I've been using it like skincare since it has such great ingredients, as my final skincare step before applying tinted moisturizer. I have really dry skin, so I douse myself and then press it into my skin.

LUMINOUS SETTING SPRAY

We’re doing dewy today and nobody can stop us. If you’re going for glow, this is the setting spray you want to choose. Set liquid and powder makeup with a fresh, radiant finish. Our cult fave micro-fine mist is infused with coconut water, apple extract, and glycerin to instantly help skin hydration and skin moisture while providing a sweat-proof, humidity-proof shield so your look stays all day.

“That glazed, dewy look will never get old for me – I like to look as if I lightly worked out an hour ago. I stash the luminous setting spray in my fridge so I can not only reactivate my complexion products throughout the day but it also wakes me up when I spritz it around the 3pm weekday slump.”

SUNSETTER BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 30 SETTING SPRAY

We know you know how crucial sun protection is when it comes to keeping your skin in tip-top shape. Let your makeup and skincare do double duty with this micro-fine SPF-infused setting spray that sets and improves the wear of your makeup while protecting your complexion against sun, blue light, and environmental aggressors.

I love using Sunsetter as a quick way to apply added SPF. I’ll wear it by itself not just as a setting spray. Sun safety is very important!
